Girl, Put Your Records On
This song by Corinne Bailey Rae inspires me. She touches my soul with her warm, smooth voice and those happy, light notes ring of childhood summer days laughing with my best friend. Remember those days when you didn’t have a care in the world?
Now, there’s this wonderful fabric called Linen. It is one of the oldest fabrics known to man and is often a symbol of purity. It also happens to be my very favorite fabric in the whole world! It is versatile, environmentally friendly, works in all design styles and all seasons, and has this lovely character that makes it softer and more beautiful with age.
Then there are figs. I discovered figs when I was hunting for treasure in Home Goods. I stumbled upon this amazing candle that smelled like heaven to me! Smokey Fig. Warm, sophisticated, earthy-fresh, with hints of citrus. I was in love. I have since discovered that figs are among the oldest fruit known to man (technically a flower, I know, but we eat it like a fruit), it is incredibly nutritious and has long been a symbol of peace and prosperity.
All this to introduce you to Linen + Fig, and tell you why your surroundings matter to you, and to me.
Linen + Fig is the home staging, styling, and e.Design company that I founded in 2018. I have many “why’s” for starting it, but the biggest is a simple word: home. But it isn’t a simple meaning.
Home is the most important place in the world. For everyone. Everywhere. It’s where the people we love are to be refreshed, comforted, nurtured, educated, and enjoyed. It must be a safe sanctuary in this crazy world. For that to happen it must feel like one to you.
This is why your surroundings matter. Your surroundings strongly influence how you feel mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. If you’re surrounded by things that aggravate you, embarrass you, or make you uncomfortable in any way, you can’t feel your best, right?
Now, I know that it shouldn’t matter WHAT you have. And really, it doesn’t. We are not what we own. But, it does affect HOW we feel. What we hear, see, feel, and smell are the surroundings that influence our wellbeing.
Corrine Bailey Rae singing “Girl, Put Your Records On”, the look and feel of linen, the scent of fig - these are the surroundings that make me feel most at ease, happy, and refreshed. Chances are pretty good you’d see me dancing, too!
And this is why I named my company Linen and Fig. “Linen, Fig, and Girl, Put Your Records On” just seemed kind of long ;)
